Revolutionizing helmet technology with ShieldX, a micro-engineered membrane that enhances helmet performance. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is reported to be a major cause of death and disability worldwide, especially in children and young adults. During an impact to the head, the brain experiences both compressional and rotational forces, potentially resulting in TBI. Brain tissue is 1,000,000 times more sensitive┬╣ to the shear forces caused by rotational and linear acceleration compared to compression resulting from linear acceleration. Thus the amount of rotational force is thought to be a major component in TBI and its severity. Research studies in the field of head injury show that nearly all impacts to the head hit at an angle (obliquely) causing both rotational and linear acceleration of the head. Oblique impacts result in a sharp twisting of the brain inside the skull. The two main injuries caused by the very same twisting are subdural hematoma and diffuse axonal injury which can result in severe traumatic brain injury, and even death. ShieldX has been designed to reduce the rotational acceleration (caused by friction forces) and the linear acceleration of the brain during most oblique impacts.
